MasterData resides in a MasterData server where it can be captured or queried. It is structured as a list of vocabularies, identified by a URN, that holds a set of VocabularyElements, also identified by URNs. The elements may have attributes with additional fields. Confusion may arise by the unfortunate fact that Master Data is often expressed in XML where “Element” and “Attribute” already have their own meaning. The Master Data attribute is expressed as an XML element <attribute/> and may itself have additional XML attributes.

Master Data Dictionary (MDD) is Master Data meta data that defines which vocabularies and vocabulary elements are available for editing and restrictions and requirements on the attributes of these.
